Kid-friendly Android TV box setup with TiviMate

Published · Time to read: 5 min read

The moment a child picks up the remote and starts browsing freely, a parent realizes the default setup was never designed with young viewers in mind. TiviMate on an Android TV box gives you two layers of control that work independently of whatever your service provides: the Android system settings and TiviMate's own PIN and channel filters. Use both together and the channels your kids should not reach stay out of reach, without touching anything on the account itself.

Start with Android's built-in parental controls

Before opening TiviMate, go into the Android TV system settings — the gear icon on the home screen — and find Parental controls or Restricted Profile, depending on the version of Android TV your box runs. A restricted profile is the stronger option: it creates a separate environment where only the apps you approve are visible. The main profile, protected by a PIN you set during setup, stays out of reach for anyone who does not know it.

If your box runs Google TV rather than the older Android TV launcher, look for Accounts & sign-in and then Supervised accounts. The flow is slightly different but the outcome is the same: a child-facing profile that cannot install apps or wander into system settings.

Set a PIN that is not obvious — not a birth year, not a simple repeating digit. Write it down somewhere the children will not find it. The system will ask for it any time someone tries to exit the restricted profile or change a setting.

Lock TiviMate with a PIN and filter the channel list

Once TiviMate is open, go to Settings → General → Parental control. Enable it, then set a four-digit PIN. With parental control active, TiviMate will ask for that PIN before it allows changes to settings or before it opens any channel you have individually marked as restricted.

To mark a channel as restricted, long-press it in the channel list. A context menu appears; choose Edit channel or Mark as adult, depending on the TiviMate version installed. Marked channels still appear in the list but require the PIN to open. If you would rather the channels not appear at all, create a custom group:

  1. Go to Settings → Channels → Groups and create a new group with a name only you will recognize.
  2. Add the channels suitable for children to that group.
  3. Set that group as the default playlist shown when TiviMate opens.

Children see only the group you built. The full channel list exists but is not the first thing on screen.

For cooking content in particular, the IPTV Systems channel guide at iptv.systems shows how to find and organize food channels using favorites and categories — useful when you are building a child-safe group and want to include some lighter viewing for the whole family.

Keep the remote simple

Even with software controls in place, a child who figures out the remote can stumble into settings menus. Android TV boxes usually pair with a standard remote that has a dedicated settings or home button. If your box supports it, use the Remote & Accessories section in system settings to remap or disable buttons — some launchers let you restrict what the home button does inside a restricted profile.

A simpler approach: use a spare remote with fewer buttons if you have one, or look in the Google Play Store (from the main profile) for a launcher designed for children. These launchers replace the home screen with a large-icon grid of approved apps and have no visible path to system settings.

For general tips on navigating content libraries by search rather than browsing — which also helps adults find things faster — the approach described in search tips for finding content in a streaming app transfers well to TiviMate's own search function.

What to check after you have set everything up

Sit down with the remote yourself and work through the setup the way a child would. Try to exit the restricted profile without the PIN. Try to open a restricted channel in TiviMate without the PIN. Try pressing the settings button. If any of those steps gets through, something is not configured correctly — go back and check whether the restricted profile was saved properly or whether the TiviMate PIN was actually enabled rather than just entered during setup.

Also confirm that TiviMate opens automatically inside the restricted profile. If it does not appear in the allowed-apps list for that profile, add it from the main profile's restricted-profile settings.

If you are setting this up on a MAG Box IPTV Android box shared with older family members who also watch sports, the channel group approach works well: adults switch to the full playlist with the PIN, children stay in their curated group by default. A household that also follows country music channels organized by category can apply the same group-building logic there — one group for children, one for adults, each set as the default for the right profile.

Common questions

Will the TiviMate PIN stop children from changing the channel list?

Yes. With parental control enabled in TiviMate's settings, any attempt to edit channels, groups or settings will prompt for the PIN. A child who does not know it cannot make changes.

What is the difference between a restricted profile and TiviMate's own PIN?

A restricted profile is an Android system feature that limits which apps are visible and prevents access to device settings altogether. TiviMate's PIN works inside the app to block specific channels or settings changes. Using both together gives you protection at the device level and at the app level.

Can a child switch back to the main profile by accident?

Not if the main profile is protected by a PIN. Android will ask for the PIN before allowing a switch out of the restricted profile, so an accidental button press will not cause a problem.

Do these settings survive a TiviMate update?

TiviMate stores its settings locally, and they generally persist across app updates. After any update it is worth opening settings briefly to confirm that parental control is still enabled and the PIN is still active.
